As Justin told you earlier, the line above should be:
#define NDEBUG
to eliminate the overhead of bounds-checking, etc.
On the compiler command-line, it is "-DNDEBUG", which is the
concatenation of the "-D" option, meaning to define a preprocessor
symbol, and "NDEBUG", the literal symbol.
