I think CORBA predates even original STL.
In STL meaning of pointer and reference is...
typedef foo & foo_reference;
typedef foo * foo_pointer;
*ptr <==> ref
ptr->x() <==> ref.x()
So you would not expect a pointer to have any
members other than those for managing the pointer.
Plus a reference should never be null.
