I tried today with the freely available Borland C++ v5.5, which
seems to feature a somewhat different set of bugs.

Um, oops, yes the workarounds are for C++ Builder 4, I didn't try with
version 5 and now that I have I wish I hadn't :-(
I'll try and figure out something better for builder 5, but it may prove to
be impossible.
